advice?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice in succession, then type
Administrator as a login account. Make sure you
get the spelling right!

This is by design. If XP Pro do ctrl-alt-del at the welcome screen to get
the classic login dialog box. Type Administrator as user and the assigned
password. In XP Home boot into safe mode and the Administrator account will
appear on the Welcome Screen.

The built in Administrator account should not be used for normal activities.
Create another account with admin privileges and a limited user account.
Use either of those. The Administrator account should be kept as a fall
back in case something damages the other accounts. Also disable the guest
account. It should not be used for "visitors" using the computer, despite
the implication of its name. If you need an account for visitors create a
limited user account and call it Visitor or whatever else you want.

As you've discovered, once any additional administrative user
accounts have been created, the built-in Administrator account will no
longer be displayed on the Welcome Screen. This is a default security
feature. By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account
of WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login
dialog box.

The built-in Administrator account really was never intended to be
used for day-to-day normal use. The standard security practice is to
rename the account, set a strong password on it, and use it only to
create another account for regular use, reserving the Administrator
account as a "back door" in case something corrupts your regular account(s).

A wiser course of action would be to create another user account
for your daily use (as you've done), and copy desired the files and
settings from the Administrator account to this newly created user profile.

Are you using the Welcome screen (the screen were you can use one click to
log on)? If so, the only accounts that will appear are those that are
subsequently created after your administrator account. It is still possible
to log in with the Administrator account. Go to the Control Panel, under
user accounts, and change the way users log on to user name and password
(Deselect Welcome Screen). Keep in mind that any user you create after the
initial install (the screen when it asks you who will be using this
computer) will be administrators by default. Hope this helps.

For XP Pro at the Welcome Screen just do ctrl-alt-del twice to bring up the
classic login dialog box. For XP Home you have to boot into Safe Mode and
Administrator appears on the Welcome Screen.
