Admin tools NOT in Control Panel

G

Guest

How do I get the Administrative Tools icon(folder?) back into Control Panel.
I can get to Administrative Tools via the start menu and all programs, but it
has disappeared from Control Panel. When I try to drag a 'copy' of it from
the start menu, I get the 'circle/slash' pointer. Other users on this
computer do have the administrative tools icon in their control panel.
Thanks for any help.

PATOPP,

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum]

What are the values present in the right-pane?

There is no [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum]
but there is:
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum]
its contents are:
(Default)
{0DF44EAA-FF21-4412-828E-260A8728E7F1}

Hi PATOPP,

The REG looks OK. Are you sure if this problem is profile specific? And,
does it happen in both Control Panel modes (Classic as well as Category view
Performance and maintenance section) ?

The view is kept as classic for all folders, however when category is used,
there is no Administrator Tools icon in Performance and Maintenance, either.
When I log on as both myself and administrator, 'Administrative Tools' icon
does show up in control panel.

Patopp,

See if the key "{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}" is present under:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace]

"{D20EA4E1-3957-11d2-A40B-0C5020524153}" represents Admin Tools folder.

Yes, Ramesh, the key is present. I'm tryin to compare copies of her registry
and mine in a text editor. Any suggestions on where to focus my search. Her
registry is 64 MB, mine's 57MB. She has some additional software installed.
Thank you so far for your help. I'm having trouble finding anyone that can
help.

I appreciate the reg fix, however it is being blocked from downloading
(greyed out)
due to a change in security here. I will have to go home to download the
file. Unless...
.... you could send it to (e-mail address removed)? Thank you for all your help.

Patop,

I'm not sure why the standard item does not display there. I've created a
REG file which adds the Administrative Tools to Control Panel, for your user
profile. This workaround may help.

Instructions:
-----------
Find attached the file <admint.001> and save to Desktop.
Rename admint.001 file to admint.REG
Double-click admint.REG to merge the contents to registry
(If you want to view the REG file, open it with Notepad.)

To download the attachment, you need to use a newsreader.

Hi

You are using the Web interface to the newsgroups, and it does not
support attachments.

Check your e-mail, I just sent the file to you.

Thank you, both.
Even with the Outlook Express news interface, it was greyed out. I did get
the fix and will be trying it out soon. Thank you so much for your help. I
think you've gone over and above what is normally anticipated. I'll let you
know how it works.

I'm sorry to report that this did not fix the problem. Still no administrative
tools in control panel. (sorry it took so long to get back with you, I had
another emergency to take care of)

Patopp,

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Explorer
\User Shell Folders

Do you see a Administrative Tools value in the right pane? If so, what's the
data assigned?

G

Ramesh,
No, there is no Administrative Tools value. I did compare that location
with my own computer's registry, and they are identical. they show listings
for Common appdata, desktop, etc. Thanks for hanging with me, I'm still
trying too.

I've got your reg file, but the user is out sick today, so I can't use it

That reg did not work either. It looks like it is a corrupted profile. I
tried removing it and rebuilding it and there were some errors to the effect
that the profile is corrupt because it was unable to update a policy. After
those errors, the profile then showed up in Documents and Settings under
'temp', which dissapeared when I logged on as local admin. I guess I'm going
to try and create another, new profile for her. Thanks so much for your help

That didn't work either. It's following her. She is not set up to have a
roaming profile. I don't know what's going on.
