Admin Right problem

I can not use the msconfig program because I receive a message that I need
administrator rights. I am logged on as an administrator. This is the
second time this has happened the first time I had to format the hard drive
and reinstall everything. The computer is a Win XP Pro set up on a home
network. All the latest windows update are applied. We are running Symantec
Antivirus 10.x with undated virus deffs.

I open the msconfig program choose Selective Startup then choose the
Services tab and put a check mark in the hide all Microsoft Services. I then
push the deselect all button then ok. I receive this message:

“An Access Denied error was returned While Attempting to change a service.
You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified
changes.â€

I have tried to do this logged on as the administrator account
(administrator account that was created by the system). I have also tried
another account at I created and have given administrative right but I get
the same results.

I was able to use this program when I first rebuilt the system. The user
installed programs like quicken, software to sync palm pilot phone etc… when
the use attempted to install itunes soft where there was a problem with
internet exployer 7 and the user reset to default setting. After I went
through the Run-once program for IE7 this problem began to happen. I don’t
know if they are related. Not sure where to go to troubleshoot this.

Hi Kevin,

This is generally caused by an overly aggressive security program such
as an anti-spyware app. Try disabling your Security Application and
make the changes. Then re-enable your Security applications.

The only program that I can think of that would fall into that category would
be Symantec and I have never had any problems like this before. I will
defiantly give it a try. Thank you for your reply.
