Admin problems + diacritics problems

Hello

2 problems related to XP, I think

1). Somehow XP no longer recognizes our ID as administrator. On our computer there are only 2 IDs, my and my husband's joint ID, and the Guest. Nobody else uses the computer but me and my husband, and we don't know how it came undone. At first it was working, we had access to everything. Now we cannot access the administrator function -- we are blocked from it on our ID. Somehow I think the Guest ID now has administrator rights, but I cannot access them through Guest either. (How can I regain administrator rights?) Anyway a few problems coincided with this new development

a). We cannot access internet options in IE 6.0 to make changes due to lack of administrator rights. Consequently our IE homepage is stuck at "about: blank" and we cannot select a new homepage

b). Certain web sites won't load properly, such as ebay, and also I noticed that it won't allow me to do a google search on my own name (possibly because of IE security settings, which I cannot access? Or could this be due to McAfee Internet Security?

2.) We use Outlook and Word (from Office 2000) on Windows XP. Ever since we upgraded to XP, the diacritics when we switch to either French or Portuguese toolbars will not work in either Outlook or in Word (i.e., when you press the accent, then the letter, it will not merge them to an accented letter like it is supposed to do). We use a standard qwerty american keyboard, the same one we were using before we switched to XP and which worked with the French and Portuguese toolbars before

Anybody know what we can do about these problems? Our free support has run out (though I do not recall using them!)

Hi Julia,

You have been hijacked. You can restore the Internet Options via my edit on
line 268: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

However, your best move is to remove the hijacker keys:

Hijack This : http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

Once done, run these others, it won't hurt:

Ad-Aware

Spybot

1st problem solved --

Turns out the admin problem causing us to not be able to access IE Options was really a SPYBOT admin problem and not an XP problem (thank goodness). The solution was to uncheck a few functions locking out the Internet Options from within Spybot, and explorer was back to new. The Google search problem was a McAfee Internet Security problem, I think, but fiddling with the settings I can do it now

STILL HAVING THE DIACRITICS PROBLEM, THOUGH>>> ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANK YOU!

PROBLEM SOLVED~!!!

To obtain diacritics with XP you must make sure that the keyboard is set to US-International", not just US. You go to Control Panel, Dates & Languages, click on regional languages, click on details, and for each language you add in you must also be sure the keyboard selection is US-International

Thanks.

Hello,

2 problems related to XP, I think:

1). Somehow XP no longer recognizes our ID as administrator. On our
computer there are only 2 IDs, my and my husband's joint ID, and the
Guest. Nobody else uses the computer but me and my husband, and we
don't know how it came undone. At first it was working, we had
access to everything. Now we cannot access the administrator
function -- we are blocked from it on our ID. Somehow I think the
Guest ID now has administrator rights, but I cannot access them
through Guest either. (How can I regain administrator rights?)
Anyway a few problems coincided with this new development:

a). We cannot access internet options in IE 6.0 to make changes due
to lack of administrator rights. Consequently our IE homepage is
stuck at "about: blank" and we cannot select a new homepage.

That isn't because you don't have administrator rights. You might have
a virus or something similar. Run an UP-TO-DATE anti-virus program as
well as Spybot Search & Destroy.
b). Certain web sites won't load properly, such as ebay, and also I
noticed that it won't allow me to do a google search on my own name
(possibly because of IE security settings, which I cannot access? Or
could this be due to McAfee Internet Security?)

Again, that's not because you're not an administrator. Run anti-virus
and Spybot.
2.) We use Outlook and Word (from Office 2000) on Windows XP. Ever
since we upgraded to XP, the diacritics when we switch to either
French or Portuguese toolbars will not work in either Outlook or in

merge them to an accented letter like it is supposed to do). We use
a standard qwerty american keyboard, the same one we were using
before we switched to XP and which worked with the French and
Portuguese toolbars before.

Have you gone to Office Update and gotten all the patches? If so,
again, run anti-virus and Spybot.
Anybody know what we can do about these problems? Our free support
has run out (though I do not recall using them!)

I hope that's of at least some help.
