Admin Clients

I work in an environment where we are building multiple datamarts in SQL Server 2000

We use an ETL tool that extracts data from various data sources, transforms the data, and then writes to the datamart tables. Depending on the complexity of the transformations, the ETL processes can require a considerable amount of memory and CPU

Hence when testing a build we logon to the server with TS and run the builds

We are only using the 2 cals of TS that comes with Win2K. We have four developers and wish to get an extra 2 cals on the server

We have been advised that to extend the licenses we would have to convert the server to a full blown terminal server which may affect existing installed applications

All we want is to do is to logon as one would in Unix in a telnet session

The proposed solution to allow up to four developers to logon seems a bit over the top.

Well admin mode is always there. You need to enable Terminal Services Via
Add/Remote Programs- Windows Components.

Now beware!. You need terminal Services licensing somewhere to allow this
with a number of cals if your workstations arent 2kpro or better. In
addition when you Change a server to TS it changes the server (even though
it is subtle)
I DONT recommend this to allow 4 guys on a production server hosting data at
once. But that is just my opinion.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the reply.

What is involved in converting to a 'regular application mode terminal
server' ? Is it a case of adding the extra licenses ? Or is there something
more involved ?
