AdManKeep.exe is shutting me down!

I am operating Windows XP Home Edition vs. 2002. In the last few days my
computer has booted normally only to begin slowing down almost as soon as the
session is underway. The longer I'm on, the slower things get until after
about 10 minutes an error message is displayed "AdManKeep.exe failed to
execute sucessfully". At this point nothing works and the only way to shut
down the computer is to power off. I have cleaned up all the spyware
(spybot, Ad aware)and McAfee shows no viruses. I even found and tried to
remove AdManKeep.exe from the system files but it keeps coming back.

Any advice from a more sophisticated user than I would be deeply
appreciated. My wife is about to go nuts and you know the saying, when Momma
ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

Many thanks. John (first time user!)

I was able to remove it myself.

Here's what I did. This should work for most people, although it can
vary depending on your computer and OS. I wrote out the instructions in
case whoever reads this isn't familiar with modifying the registry of
their computer. It's important to follow these instructions carefully.

1. Boot up in Safe Mode (Hold F8 after computer power-up)

2. When Windows starts, go to Start>Run

3. Open the registry editor by typing 'regedit'.

4. Using the list on the left hand side of the Registry Editor, navigate
to this registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/

On the right hand side of the Registry Editor, you'll see some registry
entries. Highlight and delete this and ONLY this registry entry:

Admanager Controller

5. Then, exit the Registry Editor. Point your Explorer to C:\Program
Files\ and delete the Admanager Controller folder. Empty your Recycle Bin.

6. Finally, go to Start>Run and type 'msconfig'. Select the Startup tab
and uncheck AdManCtl. Click OK and Restart the PC.

Good luck!

Be very very careful when following the advice on that page. Above
all make absolutely certain that you fully understand the purpose of a
startup item, how and why it was put into the startup sequence, and
the consequences of removing it before doing so. Some startup items
are very important for the safe and proper functioning of your
computer and this is not always readily apparent from the name of the
item. Some inquiry or investigation is required.

Thanks Ron. It was very kind of you to take the time to reply. I'll carefully heed your warning.

Try AdAware SE Pro v.1.05 and it will fix the problem. First
it will ask if you want that it shuts down the PC to repair the
problem, then it will reboot the computer, clean the spyware
and go to the normal desktop.

I would suggest that you search then for "admanc*"
and "admank*" after everything is ok. You will be able to kill
two more files that remain on your HDD.

Let Momma be happy

AdAware 6 has been discontinued. But there is a free version of the
new AdAware SE which is very good.
