addresses not found in contact folder

Removing and reinstalling Outlook won't help a bit. You'll still be left
with the same Outlook profile.
To create a new "profile" in IMO, quit Outlook, export then delete this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings

Restart Outlook. It will create a new profile automatically. It will have a
brand new PST file as its default. You can then open your other data file,
copy what you need from it, then close it.

I'm returning after a short illness, sorry for the delay.

The above steps did not resolve the problem :-(

I did get a new profile, at least my contact folder and inbox were
empty when I restarted Outlook98. I manually added one entry to the
contact folder and then tried to compose a new email message using the
name for that contact in the to: box and still no autofind of the
email address.

I did find that there was one name I could put in the to: box and upon
exiting that field it would get underlined. That name is the single
name I have in an instance of Outlook Express address book I have on
this machine and it seems to be in a address book "Main Identities
Contacts".

Why would you import the registry key again? That's the broken profile.

If I recall I put the registry back because operating "crippled" was
better than what existed after deleting the key in the registry.

Your thread is long dead. So is your Outlook version. You'll need to clue us
in on what your original issue was.

Your thread is long dead.

Sorry, like I said I was incapacitated for a while.
So is your Outlook version.

Yes, OL98 still works (or it did) for what functionality I use and
since I can't afford to upgrade it has been my solution.
You'll need to clue us in on what your original issue was.

Here's the short rundown.

First problem started when OL98 would freeze whenever I selected
the calendar folder. The following url seemed to describe my situation
exactly:

http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-1810640.php

however I could never successfully implement the suggested solution.

To solve this problem I reinstalled OL98 and then, given my infrequent
need to do this level of operation, I imported my pst rather than
opening it. The calendar fucntion was working again but the current
problem is that when I compose an email message I can no longer type a
name in the to: box and have the correct email address found for that
name in my contact folder. When expanding the to: box none of my
contacts are listed (from shared contacts). In this mode I can select
"Main Identities Contacts" and see one name from an address book I
have with Outlook express on this same machine. Also, my "signature"
is not automatically added to the message body when I start a new
message.

Your suggestion from March 5 was to delete a key in the registry which
would force OL98 to begin a new profile when it was reopened. That was
the process I just tried today without success.

BTW, thanks for responding after my brief illness.

Please state which mail support mode of Outlook 98 you are using. The KB
article you cite may not apply.

Internet Mail Only, OL98, WinXP.

The url I referenced was only for historical perspective, the problem
with the calendar freezing is gone, but the problem with not being
able to enter a name in the to: box and not have the name matched with
an email address from the contact folder remains.

I see. Yes I remember this thread now. So at what point in this process are
you now? Did you create a new profile with a new PST? Do you have only one
PST file in this profile? What happens when you try to resolve a name in the
To: field?

Here is the first post I did after returning from my short illness:

Try this. Exit Outlook completely. Now open Outlook Express and open its
address book. Go to Tools > Options. If sharing is not enabled, enable it.
If it is enabled, disable it, restart OE, then enable it again. Exit OE.
Start Outlook.

The "Do Not Share" box is checked but it cannot be unchecked, the
"Share" item above it is greyed out and cannot be selected.

Then your version is too far out of date and out of support to be of any
use.

One other thing that worked back in the day is to rename your wab32.dll fine
then repair Outlook Express. I suspect that current OE versions are now too
far distant from Outlook 98 for OL 98 to continue to function properly.

Empty folders are not the sign of a new profile. You should point the new
profile to your existing PST with File>Open>Personal Folder File and then
use FiIle>Properties to make the PST your delivery location. Stop and
restart Outlook and you should be back to using your existing data. Remove
any extra PSTs with right-click>Close in the Folder List.
I manually added one entry to the
contact folder and then tried to compose a new email message using the

I don't know what you mean by "autofind". Do you mean CTRL-K? In which
folder did you add the contact?
