-Snip
Jeff, Time & Chaos ver. 5.6.10 can do that. Not the latest version (but
still very good) and freeware.
Available from
http://www.chaossoftware.com/products.asp
under Legacy Products.

HTH,
Uncas

Thanks! I've downloaded it, and it looks great. The only thing it seems
to lack is a general notes area -- freeform notes not attached to an
appointment or a person.

I appreciate this.

Small, but decisive question: does it the "legacy" edition run under Win
XP, even unde WinXP SP 2 ?

Quoting from the webpage: "Works with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP"

"Time & Chaos 5 is available as a legacy product and has been
replaced with version 6. The last update to Time & Chaos 5 was
released on 6/18/2003. In 2005, Time & Chaos 5 was re-released as
freeware, but with no feature changes above and beyond the last
version 5.x release. Works with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. Size:
3556 KB Price: FREE"

All the best,

Thanks, and it runs. No let(s see what it can do. Years ago ( Win 3.1)
I used the shareware version of Packrat as a PIM which was quite
excellent. I had some 400 contacts, with contact history etc. In it. Abd
then, I made a mistake and upgradet to the Pro version , real crap which
destroyed my data base. Since then, I use a paper agenda ...

It's running just fine here on that very system.

And, to boot, I had a question, sent it to their tech support folks, and
they responded! Unheard of!

I successfully imported all my contacts into the program. And I like that
it has a built-in backup program, keeping data safe. It's really nicely
designed. Some may not like it, the screen is very busy. But I think I
can get used to it.

But it does not seem to offer any export feature, to CSV or other
formats? Nor any separat utility to convert from their proprietary
format? If so, what do you do then - the day you want to move all your
data to a different PIM?

All the best,

Found it (RTFM as they say;) :

Export feature is provided when you perform a search (search button),
in the search results window - in the File->Create menu.

From the (pdf)user-guide found at
<http://www.chaossoftware.com/programs/32bit/tcguide.pdf>:

Exporting data

Once you have found the information you are seeking, you can take
advantage of the many Create options we have available to utilize
or transfer the data. These options include vCards, ASCII
delimited files, mail merges to your word processor, Microsoft
Excel spreadsheets or Lotus WKS files, Transportable Records,
Outlook Express Import File, and support for the Sharp Wizard
5500 and Timex DataLink devices. However, it is vital that you
remember to select or highlight the items you wish to base your
creation on. The most common mistake made when exporting is users
forgetting to select any items first. When you create an ASCII
file or do a mail merge, only the highlighted records will come
out on the other end.
Note: If you wish to select all the items you found in your
search results, you can click on the Edit menu and then click on
Select All to highlight everything you found.

It's there, but in an unconventional place.

1. Click on the search option and use it to select the records you want
to print or export. If you want all records, then just leave the "search
for" box blank.

2. Click "Find now."

3. Now go to the File menu, and you'll see "Create." That submenu has
lots of export options, just about everything I'll ever need.

Hope this helps.
