Address book missing and it won't let me add it

My address book has disappeared after I upgraded from Office 2000 Pro to
Office 2003 Pro (running on Windows XP Pro). I went to Tools/Email
Accounts/Add a new directory or Address book/Next/Additional Address Books,
but I could not select Outlook Address Book because it was not
there...nothing was in the "Additional Address Book Types" list to select
from. I have already tried repairing my installation, have downloaded updates
for Office 2003, etc. I don't know what else to do. By the way, I don't know
if this is causing a problem or not, but I had to reload FrontPage 2000 and
PhotoDraw since they aren't included in the new suite and I have current work
that requires them. Thanks.

Outlook does not tolerate an upgrade installation. You must create a new
Outlook profile from scratch right away if you try it. It is always better
to install Office clean.

Thanks, Russ. When I said "upgrade" I just meant that I went from 2000 to
2003--it was a clean installation.

Then the instructions here in a new profile would apply:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;287563&Product=ol2002

Did you repair Office 2003 after you installed Office 2000 apps? What mail
transports have you configured in your profile?

Yes, I repaired Office 2003 after installing the Office 2000 apps. Sorry,
I'm not sure what you mean by "mail transports." I have 7 different email
Pop3 accounts set up which I send and receive from.

When you say that "the instructions here in a new profile would apply" do
you mean that I need to create a new profile now and then do what it says on
the page you gave the URL for, or do you mean that those instructions should
have worked on the new profile that was created when I set up Outlook 2003?
If so, then they didn't work-- at Step 1, #6 I could not select "Outlook
Address Books" because it was not on the list (nothing appeared under
"Additional Address Book.") On Step 2, #2 I cannot select "Show this folder
as an e-mail address book" because it is grayed out.

I meant to try the instructions in a new Outlook profile. Something is wrong
with either your profile or your installation. When you click on Additional
Books Address what do you see? So you get any dialog box at all?
When you click on View or change existing Address Books, what do you see?

When I click on "Additional Address Books" I get a dialogue box entitled
"Other Address Book Types" - it says,

"You can choose the type of address book you'd like to add.

Outlook supports these additional address book types. Select the address
book type you want to connect to and click Next.

Additional Address Book Types"

Under that is a blank white box with nothing to choose from. When I click
in the blank box it makes a dotted rectangle as if it were outlining a choice.

When I click on "View or change existing directories or address books" I get
a dialogue box entitled "Directories and Address Books," which says, "You can
choose a directory or address book below to change or remove it." There are
no choices given, just column headings of "Name" and "Type." I'm given an
option button to "Add..." When I click it, I get the "Directory or Address
Book Type" dialogue box, with choices of "Internet Directory Service" and
"Additional Address Books." When I choose "Additional Address Books" it is
as I have described above in the first paragraph.

From what you said, it looks like I'd better try creating a new profile to
see if that makes the difference. If that doesn't help and it's narrowed down
to an installation problem, are there special instructions I should know
about? Do I just uninstall and reinstall Outlook, or do I need to do
anything else with other files or Office programs (such as the FP 2000 and
Photodraw 2000)?

Thanks.

clue. No one else has ever reported this to my knowledge.

My address book is back--here's what happened:

I tried to add a profile, but it said, "There was an error locating one of
the items needed to complete this operation. It might have been deleted."
As I researched that error message I found someone that said the mapisvc.inf
file might be the problem (http://blog.maccarocks.com/category/microsoft/
under the heading "rolling back from Outlook 12). When I read that, I
remembered that I had briefly installed Office 2007 trial version before
realizing that my Sharp electronic organizer won't sync with anything past
Outlook 2003, so I uninstalled it and installed 2003 instead. According to
some things I'm reading, uninstalling Office 2007 leaves behind a mapisvc.inf
problem. I searched my computer and found 3 copies of that file, so I
renamed them and restarted Outlook. It acted like the beginning of a new
installation, but then came up OK; and now it allows me to find and add my
Address Book again. So that problem is evidently fixed--sorry I didn't
mention before that I had briefly tried Outlook 2007. I thought that
uninstalling it and running Registry First Aid had cleaned up after it.

Thanks so much for your willingness to help.
