I can no longer search from the address bar. I removed a redirect spyware that was causing the problem, it worked for a day or two and the same problem returned. I have scanned with everything known to mankind and can find nothing. I am using Windows 2000 professional with all the current updates.

Click on the Advanced tab and find the entry for "Use Inline Autocomplete",
if it is ticked untick it and see if the address bar now works, if it *does*
now work then the history file is corrupt or has a corrupt entry.

Locate the directory Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\History
folder, and delete the history file.

If that doesn't work try these

Look in Internet Options -> General tab -> Temporary Internet Files ->
Settings button -> View Objects

Delete any objects that are in there, any required ones will be reloaded
when you visit the site related to it.

Go to the Security tab and check if the spyware listed any URL addresses in
the Trusted Sites zone. Delete anything you find in there.
