Address bar broken

Hello,

This is XP Home:

The address bar of the explorer is broken (was ok about 1 week ago). I start
typing a path like "c:\..." then suddenly what I'm typing gets highlighted.
To keep typing I have to hit the right arrow (or click to the right of the
highlighted text). The way it used to work was that as I type, the possible
matches of the partial path would be displayed below the address bar.

This problem is only for the explorer, it works in IE. So that's my work
around for now: open an IE, type in the path, then click on the Folders icon
to see the folder tree on the left. BTW, once I click on the Folders button
in IE, the problem is back, since I guess IE gets morphed into E, or
something...

I'm not sure this is spyware related since I think I finally cleaned them
all off, and nothing is detected with several tools. I have a feeling it's
related to some automatic update which I've enabled about a month ago. Is
Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks!

Marco

THere's a new twist to this problem. I cannot do a Save As from MS Word. The
"Save In" dropdown takes forever to come down, and when it does it flashes;
but it's too fast for me to make any selections. Then Word crashes.

I tried a restore as of Nov 1st but that didn't fix it. I'll try a little
further back.
