Hi i have 2 windows 2000 server and have jus purchased a windows 2003
server. On the first w2k server (admin) i have exchange 2000 running
and the second (admin2) it runs AD and is the PDC. What i need to to
do is add Windows 2003 server (admin3) as a domain controller. DO i
need to run adprep/domainprep? also will i have any issues with
exchange 2000?

Thanks

See tip 7500 » What operations are performed by the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Adprep.exe utility that is used to prepare a Microsoft Windows 2000 forest or a Windows 2000 domain for the installation of Windows Server 2003 domain
controllers? in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsifaq.com

Looking at this myself. I was told by some Microsoft consultants that just
about everything you need to know is in here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=325379
It's very verbose but chock-full of useful stuff. The name of the article
is misleading; when you add a 2003 DC to your 2000-based domain your domain
becomes 2003-based, but you don't need to upgrade your 2000 DCs to 2003 right
away - and maybe you won't at all. My company has a bunch of old slow 2000
DCs with 4GB system drives that are almost full - not ideal candidates for a
2003 upgrade. We'll be bringing new 2003 servers into the domain alongside
the 2000 DCs, promoting the new servers to DCs, then demoting and removing
the 2000 DCs.
