In WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION:

For Desktop and not Screen Saver you must put the files
into C:\Windows
But the image must has the extension .bmp
I think it also works with anterior versions of Windows.

Not so. In xp wall paper for the desktop comes from here:
c:\windows\web\wallpaper
c:\windows
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\My Documents\Pictures

Also, the pics no longer have to have a .bmp extension. Other graphic types
like jpeg anf gif will work as well.
