Adding new design template to a New slide master/title master

I have added a new slide master/title master. I am trying to add a new
design template by selecting the new slide master, and selecting the template
from my files. Each time I do this by double clicking on the template in my
file, rather than adding the design to the slide master I have selected, it
creates a new slide master/title master. Can anyone help me figure out why
this is happening and what to do about it? Thanks

I thought that hovering and clicking the arrow to the right of the design
templates and selecting "replace selected designs" would do what you want.
But it doesn't -- it also just adds a new slide master/title master combo.

So my guess is that this is by design, although I'm not quite sure why that
would be. At any rate, you're not doing anything wrong, although I can't
quite come up with a way to force a replacement.

Wait. I lied. Right-click your slide master and deselect Preserve Master.
Tell PPT not to delete the master if you're prompted. Now select those
masters and click the design template on the right. The reason you're
getting additional masters is your new master is supposed to be preserved,
and PPT is indeed preserving it.
