IMO Crucial.com is the best place to find out 1) what type of memory
your motherboard takes; 2) how much memory you can put in; 3) and the
price and quality is excellent. You don't ever want to skimp on memory.

Go to www.crucial.com and you'll see the memory selector. Here's a
direct link to the answer for a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop:

How many slots do you have left available?
Do you want to keep Dual-Channel enabled? If so you might have to match the
ram you are already running.
As far as I know, 1 GB of DDR2 ram is very inexpensive now a days.
What is your current ram frequency, 667MHz or 800MHz ?

There is no such thing as a 4.4GB processor. Are you saying that you are
over clocking your processor and running it at 4.4GHz ?
Or perhaps you miss typed and meant 2.4GHz .
Oh, I see that would be the E4600 Intel processor.

You want a good deal. I remember when ram cost about $35 a MB, that would
put a 1GB amount at about $35,000.
And people are complaining that Vista needs more ram so they have to fork
over a few bucks to get an extra Gig of ram.

you need to make sure you match PERFECTLY the memory you already have.
check to see what brand, size and speed of memory you currently have and buy patched items.

Good Morning Malke,

I have a Intel Core2 Duo processor E4500 (2.20GHz,800FSB) w/Dual Core
Technology and cache. And 2GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667MHz.

I have 2 slots open. The frequency is 667 MHz.

My RAM is 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz 2 DIMMS

crucial.com have this RAM & $28.33 each. Should I get 1 or 2?

I am somewhat a novice at this.

Thank You and the others for their responce.

I'm not exactly sure if you're asking whether you should go up to 4GB or
whether you should get two more sticks of 512MB each. For Vista, I
really think you need 2GB of RAM just for what I'd consider normal
operation. I had 1.5GB on my Vista testbed box, but it's not like I was
using it for every day work and performance was just OK, tolerable but
nothing I'd want to live with.

If you are just surfing, doing email, normal 2D stuff like word
processing, etc. then 2GB is probably enough. If you run some really
resource-hungry apps like Photoshop, then definitely go up to 3GB. With
the RAM so cheap, I think I'd just go ahead and buy one more 1GB stick
and see how things feel to you.

Malke, and others, have answered your question. But I have a question
for you: why do you want to add another 1GB?

Despite the number of people who repeat "the more memory, the better,"
that is not true. More memory helps you only if the extra memory stops
you from needing to use the page file.

How much RAM you need for good performance is *not* a
one-size-fits-all situation. You get good performance if the amount of
RAM you have keeps you from using the page file, and that depends on
what apps you run. Most people running a typical range of business
applications under Vista find that somewhere around 1-2GB works well.
Almost anyone will see poor performance with less than 1GB. Some
people, particularly those doing things like editing large
photographic images, can see a performance boost by adding even more
than 2GB, but for many others, the extra RAM will do nothing.

If you are currently using the page file significantly, more memory
will decrease or eliminate that usage, and improve your performance.
If you are not using the page file significantly, more memory will do
nothing for you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
$35 a MB - what a deal. When I first started buying RAM in late 80's, it
was about $250 a MB!!
See http://www.jcmit.com/memoryprice.htm for memory prices through the
years. Remember that the list gives memory sizes in KB.
Who is an idiot: SPAM, Adding More Memory or YOU?
You are an idiot....as well as mikeyhsd.
Why ? Because mikey called Malke's post spam.
And you, because you agreed and cheered him on.
That post was DEFINITELY *NOT* spam. Do you even know what SPAM is ? ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forum_spam
IF you had any reading comprehension, and retention, you would see that
Malke is one of the most respected person here and offers more help than
anyone, especially you, since your help is usually no help at all. You go
rambling on changing subjects in every post repetitively with no
transitions, using the wrong terminology, just giving your (whacked-out)
opinions, or just blantantly wrong information.
She is a truly *far* more personable, intelligent, and technically saavy
than you when it comes to Windows.....*waaaaaay* more. How many people
have you insulted trying to 'help' ?
Because she offered a web page of a company to someone that will tell
them exactly the info needed to buy more RAM for a PC is SPAM ? Not !!
Next thing you'll tell me if I give someone in alt.internet.wireless the
direct URL to the wireless link budget calculator on my employers
website, that would be spam too ?
Seriously, work on your reading comprehension, and stop reading way more
into EVERYTHING than the text says. Give up the conspiracy theories.
I think most here would agree.
While bickering between Frank and Alias' may disrupt some people in the
group (why I don't know, they can just choose to not read the threads),
that hurts noone, and can be ebtertaining. You on the other-hand, give
bad advice which could hurt someone's PC.
And another thing, I don't think Frank wants you 'on his side'. I know I
wouldn't. The further you are away, the better.
(Well, I did slip the 'she' in there purposely.)
How do you think phalyxB feel's about being inferior to a woman in every
way that matters in a tech newsgroup ? (rhetorical)
