adding more autotext entries

I am trying to add to my repertoire of autotext entries, but would like to
save them directly to a special template I created for them. It seems no
matter what I do, they go into my "normal.dot" template, though (after which
I have to transfer them over, then delete them from normal -- a lengthy
process). How can I directly access a custom template and add new autotext,
without all this hassle? Thanks.

If the special template is meant to be available for all documents,
store it in Word's startup folder so it loads as a global template. If
it's a template in the User Templates folder that you'll use for
basing new documents, then open that template or a document based on
it. Either way, the template becomes available for the next step.

When you're about to save the first autotext entry, use the Insert >
AutoText > AutoText dialog instead of the Alt+F3 shortcut. At the
bottom of the dialog, set the "Look in" dropdown to show your special
template. (If the dropdown shows "All active templates" then the
entries will go to normal.dot.) Then add the entry.

After that, you can use Alt+F3 and the entries will continue to go to
the special template for the remainder of the session (unless you
close the template/document so it's no longer loaded).

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/AutoText.htm for more
info.

This worked splendidly, and many thanks for the prompt, eloquently explained
reply. A follow-up: Can a ".dot file be made up of nothing but autotext
entries with all its full expressed words appearing when I open the file? Or
have I automatically created a word document, as well (by virtue of keeping
the typed text)?

A global add-in (which is what Jay described) is a template which can
contain only autotext entries. Any text in the documen t space of a global
template will be ignored. However if you make it a document template, the
autotext entries will only be available to documents created from it and the
text in the text area it contains will be available to the documents.

When saving the text in question, how am I making the distinction between
"global add-in" and a "document template?" Is it simply a matter of whether
it's saved to the start-up folder or not?

Exactly. A template in the Startup folder acts as an add-in or global
template. A template saved in the user templates folder is available for
document creation via File | New.
