adding DVD-rw to DVD-rom laptop

my laptop came with DVD-rom, I am trying to add DVD-rw.
I have NERO which reconizes the DVD-rw drive
DVDshrink and DVDFab do not reconize drive at all
I think problem is that in MY COMPUTER it reconize DVD-rw drive as DVD-rom.
When you have a computer from factory with DVD-rw it is reconized in MY
COMPUTER.
How do you reconfigure a computer to reconize DVD-rw.
I know windows xp does not reconize DVD-rw but it needs to be taught, because
some computers do.
third party programs don't work, I have looked at other forums and read the
truth.
computers need to be reconfigured.

I need info on how to reconfigure computer, if you cannot tell me how
please don't waste your time and mine.I need technical answers not programs.

I dont know why you think you need to reconfigure the computer for XP to
recognise a DVDRW. XP will see the DVD RW as soon as it is installed. You
would have to install a DVD writing program to be able to write DVDs but
windows will see it before adding any software. You dont give enough info
about the type of DVDRW, how is it connected to the computer, what if any
errors have you got, does device manager see the drive at all and so on. If
as you say Nero sees it, what happens when you try and write with Nero?

I have a lite on dvd+rw in a usb conversion kit (it works fine on a computer
that has been setup from manufacture). I have not got NERO to burn a DVD.

If anybody needs to under stand that a computer needs to be configured for
dvd-rw look at afterdawn.com forums and lockergnome.com forums. THERE ARE
PEOPLE WITH SIMULAR PROBLEMS.

I have not got NERO to burn a DVD.

What were you planning on using to burn a DVD? XP can read DVDs but cannot
burn them. (XP can burn CDs.) You'll need to install a third party app such
as Nero to burn DVDs.

Under Device Manager a USB DVD burner will be listed under a different
heading than CD/DVD drives.....check that first.
If you have XP with SP2 then the USB drivers should be working and detecting
your DVD/rw...........if not you will need to install/reinstall the USB
drivers for your particular Laptop.
Once this is functioning try opening INCD...which will list all of your DVD
drives.... which comes with Nero and format a DVD/RW................once
formatted this DVD can now be used just like a hard drive...drag&drop.At
which point Device Manager will also list the device as a DVD/RW.
On my Laptop I can remove my DVD...............you can try this before you
plug in your USB DVD if all else fails.

Jedi G,

I just went through some hassles of getting an external DVD burner to work
with my laptop. In theory, you should plug it in, Windows detects it, and it
works. Of course, like you already know, you have to use other software to
write DVDs. But it should appear in the Device Manager as a DVD-RW.

Now if you are not getting that far, and you are positive the DVD burner
works on another computer, you can try a couple things. If your laptop has
more than one USB port, try another port. See if that helps. If you get the
same results, do you have another USB device you can plug into the USB ports.
Just to make sure your laptop is recognizing anything USB. If it's not, you
have narrowed your problem down to your USB, and you can try reloading the
drivers or contacting the manufacturer if it's still under warranty.

If other USB devices do work, but your DVD burner does not, you might be
looking at a compatibility problem.

What, exactly, does happen when you plug it in? Does Windows attempt to find
the device driver and install it? Does it appear in the device manager,
perhaps with a yellow ! next to it? Have you asked on those other forums you
mentioned, and were any of them successful getting it to work on their
laptops?

in the device manager it shows the drive correctly and says drive is working
properly. The programs don't see it as a burner(only way I know how to
explain it). I also have digital camera works fine on USB.
When looking in device manager, in properties of drive, in the tab for
driver.
The two drives(the internal and the external I am trying to add) have the
same driver number. Is this suppose to be right?
Have not got much of a response from other forums, they say mostley need
3rd party programs needed but the programs are not working for me so I am
still looking for help.
thanks

have another question
when I look in device manager my two drives (in driver tab) show the same
microsoft driver, version 5.1.2535.0, Is this suppose to be right since one is
a dvd-rom and the other is dvd-rw. I have tried deleting both drives and got
the same result. Is it possible that this is my problem?????????
