Adding colour to a grouped object using custom animation

I am trying to apply colour to a grouped image (three rectangles grouped
together) using the custom animation, but it is greyed out under the
'Emphasis' option. I have no problem, however, colouring a single rectangle
using the same technique. Has anyone any ideas why this is and how I can get
around it!

Do the rectangles have to be grouped? You could apply the same emphasis to
all three at the same time by selecting all three rectangles.

Thanks for your suggestion! That's exactly what I have done! Although I'm
not sure why it doesn't like the grouped object.
