Adding a wireless router to a wired router??

R

rubbishSubsea.UK

I have linksys BEFSR41 4 port wired router whihc i have been using for some
time with no major problems.

I have now been given a Linksys WRT54G wireless router which also has 4
hard wire ports.
I was hoping to use this for laptop access in other parts of the house as
well as inter PC/Online gaming.

What i would like to have been able to do is just swap them out which i have
tried with no problems except one!!!

MS Messenger, which is strongly used within the house, does not work using
this router. Apparently there is a know bug between Linksys and Win XP.

To get around this i was wondering if and how i can plug the wireless router
into the original to give me wirelss acccess to laptops around the house and
keep the office and other desktops ( 3) plugged in on the original units
hard wire ports.

I have had a go at this but with no joy.

Any help, in idiots terms / guid, would be greatly appreciated.

Appologies if this is posted in the wrong groups.

possible, but could be quite complex if not done correctly.

wired router ==> wired pc's (nat and dhcp enabled on router - router address
192.168.2.1 - dhcp addresses 192.168.2.10=>192.168.2.13)
|
wireless router ==> laptop (nat and dhcp DISabled, manual router address
192.168.2.2 - laptop address 192.168.2.5 / connected to the uplink port on
the wired router if it has one)

this SHOULD work, but for further info, check out this site:

Try:

1. On the WRT54G disable DHCP and change its IP address to 192.168.1.254
( I assume the BEFSR41 is 192.168.1.1).

2. Connect one end of a standard ethernet cable to a numbered ethernet port
on the WRT54G. Connect the other end to the uplink port on the BEFSR41 if
it has one - if not, connect it to port #4.

I have the WRT54G and no problems with it and XP/messenger. What firmware
version are you using? (Not that I have had any problems with any of the
firmwares I have used.)

I've no idea on the firmware, any clue on how to find out? i guess there
will be something on the :Linksys pages on how to id the version and upgrade
if required.

Which IP do you use, i'm wondering if NTL service has anything to do with it
all !!! :(

If i can get the wireless version to work alone it would save a lot of
hassle
