Is this possible? wired+wireless

I would like to add a regular wired router (Linksys BEFSR81) to my network
because I've run out of ports on the wireless router(WRT54G). How can i
accomplish this?

Thanks,

Don't bother with a router - just add a switch. If you already have a
wired router lying around, then disable DHCP on it but if you'll need
to buy equipment, definitely you want a switch.

Hi Malke,

I already have the router and it's a Linksys as well. So how do I disable
DHCP for that router if the address is the same as the wireless router
(192.168.1.1).

Why is it better to have a switch?

Simple.
# Don't connect the WAN on the BEFSR81 to anything. Connect a LAN port on the
WRT54G, and any computers, as peers, to a LAN port on the BEFSR81, and any
computers.
# Change the LAN on the BEFSR81 to x.x.x.254 (or any other address not in use,
and not part of any DHCP scope).
# Disable the DHCP server on the BEFSR81.

Hi Chuck,

The wireless router is the one connected to the internet at this time. When
I go to connect the wired router to it, what would be the address I'd use to
enter the settings for it?

Connect the wired router to any computer directly with an ethernet cable
but not connected to your current network. Enter the router's address
into a browser's addressbar. This will give you the router's
configuration utility. Make desired changes, including giving it a
different IP address. Refer to the router's manual or the router
mftr.'s tech support site for more details.

You're going to want to reconfigure the BEFSR81, and leave the WiFi router
settings alone. My article refers to your adding a WiFi router to a wired
gateway; you are doing the reverse - adding a wired router to a WiFi gateway.
So you must reconfigure the wired router.

Does "it" refer to the BEFSR81? You must consult the owners manual, or connect
a computer set for DHCP assignment directly to the BEFSR81. Then run "ipconfig
/all" and note the default gateway. That's the address of the router that
you're connected to.

Please restate your question, if you are still unsure. Your use of "it" in your
question is ambiguous.

If you're buying equipment, you should buy a switch. You aren't going to use a
second router, you're just going to use a switch, so don't waste your money.

In your case, you'll be using the BEFSR81 as a switch.

Now if the BEFSR81 has the same LAN IP address as the WRT54G, you'll have to
connect it, alone, directly to one of the wired computers, and reconfigure it.
Then connect it, as I described, to the WRT54G.

Hi Chuck,

I was speaking of connecting the wired router to the wireless router but
from what I understand from you and Malke is that I need to connect the
wired router to another computer outside the wireless LAN and configure it
that way. Am I correct in this regards?

If the two routers use the same LAN IP address, then you will have to connect
one computer directly to the BEFSR81, outside the wireless LAN, yes. Then
reconfigure the BEFSR81 LAN IP address to not conflict with the wireless LAN,
but on the same subnet. And disable the DHCP server. Then connect the 2
routers as advised.

The fine manual which came with my WRT54GS shows how to connect routers in
series (as you seem to be describing).
