Adding a Partition

Guest

I'm trying to add a partition to my hard drive without using FDISK. I read the Disk Management help, which said to right-click on the "unallocated space" for my hard drive in the Disk management screen to access the option to add a partition. I have 30 GB of free space on my hard drive, but no unallocated space. I can't see how to add a partition. Is there any way I can still create the partition using Disk management? Can I create some unallocated space on my hard drive using disk management? I really don't want to have to wipe my hard drive to add another partition.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

Unless you want to destroy the existing system and start all over, you will
need a third party partitioning program to dynamically resize the existing
partition(s) and create free space for a new one. You cannot do this with
the drive tools supplied with Windows.

Partitioning programs:

BootIT NG www.terabyteunlimited.com
Partition Magic www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic
Partition Commander http://www.v-com.com/product/pc_ind.html
Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/

XP's DiskPart utility is capable of only partitioning a hard drive that is empty
or has "unallocated" free space.
For example, if you were to install a new second drive, DiskPart can be
used to partition and format it. DiskPart cannot segregate current files from
free space, therefore, only a sophisticated third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8 , can be used with a drive that already has Windows XP
installed.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

It's not always "Unallocated", the space (At the end) of the drive
could have already been partitioned, but not formatted. Open the
Disk Management tool, place your icon over the last segment of
the drive, Right Click and left click Properties. Check for the
format specification of the space. You may only have to format it
& designate a drive letter to get what you are after.
