Adding a new computer to my workgroup

R

Richard Bibby

Hej,

I have a workgroup at home call "Home" (original i know).

In this workgroup I have three PC's. These have Windows 2000 Sever, Windows
XP Home, and Windows Professional.

In the network I can see all the computers, print on my shared printer (on
the XP home), access all the shared directories on all of the machines.

I have now a new XP Home machine. I put it in the network, set up the
workgroup name, network connection etc. I can access the internet so I know
the connection is OK. I have checked the IP address/DNS which have been
allocated automatically.

When I sit at any of my old machines in the workgroup I can see the new
one... but I can not access any of the shared resources, neither can I see
any of the old computers in the workgroup when I sit at the new computer.

When I try to access a shared resources I get a message saying that "perhaps
I don't have the necessary privilges to access the PC, and to ask for the
system administrators help" (translated from Swedish).

I can also ping everything back and forth.

Any ideas how I can get my new PC to be able to share network resources?

/Richard

Did you check the "Windows Firewall" settings? If the new PC has XP with
SP2, then it pretty much secures the PC from the rest of the network, you'll
have to make configuration changes to allow it to see the other PCs and the
other PCs to actually access it.
Personally, I use Zone-Alarm Pro, instead of the Windows Firewall, as it
detects outgoing software in addition to block incoming intrusion. That
way, if you get a virus, worm or Trojan trying to call home or infect
others, ZA will ask you what to do, then you can take action to disinfect,
etc.

The XP firewall in SP2 recognizes the difference between the local network
and the Internet. This can be configured in the Exceptions tab of the
firewall settings.

Hej,

I have removed the Firewall but I still don't see the other computers in the
network... any ideas?
