Hi Alan!

The Mac OS 9 operating system can not natively communicate with Windows
machines. Also, Workgroups are a Windows feature and are not part of Mac OS
9 systems or earlier.

You do have a couple of alternatives that may get you what you're looking
for.

Dave from http://www.thursby.com is software that can be installed on a Mac
OS 9 system to allow it to participate in a Windows network. The Mac will
appear as another Windows computer.

Or you can upgrade your G4 to Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), which has native
Windows networking and the ability to join a Mac to a Windows workgroup.

Hope this helps! bill
