adding 2nd SATA drive results in no boot

OK, this is my first AMD chipset, using an ASUS SK8V w/ the (used to be)
new
64 FX processor. The box was shipped w/ 2 250 Gb SATA drives (not using
any
RAID). I added a 100 Gb EIDE drive, and installed Windows XP Pro on it,
and
was using the 2 SATA's for storage (one USED to be the OS, but after
trying
to add the 100 Gb as storage, I ran into a huge bundle of problems, so
just
installed XP on the EIDE). I started getting a bunch of those $-something
"can't write to drive" errors on one of the 250's, so formatted it,
fdisked
it, all that stuff. Now when I plug that drive into the mobo, XP shows
the
status bar of the bootup, but then it goes to a black screen and stays
that
way w/ no (humanly detectable) computer activity, and I have to do the
hard
powerdown. When I unplug that one drive, everything goes fine. I used
every combination possible of the power supply plugs and SATA cables to
cancel out the possibility of a bad wire or whatever. When the one SATA
drive full of data is plugged in by itself, everything's cool. When the
other one is plugged in, either in combination or by itself, it goes from
Win XP status scroll to black screen.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help, I really need to get these damned drives
going, I'm trying to get into editing video and whatnot.

Sounds like a bad drive to me. Have you tried running the manufacturers
testing software on it. If you bought the drive retail a CD should have
come with it, otherwise you can download it from their web site.
One other thing you were booting off the SATA drive, did you
ever change the boot settings in the bios after you installed XP on the
EIDE drive.
