i am trying to set up the fax and using the instructions i put the XP SP2 CD
in and it keeps saying in drive A (which is a floppy), I change it to drive E
and it won't read it, saying file cannot be found, insert XP SP2 into drive
A. I don't have a floppy with XP sp2 on it, so what can I do? This has
happened several times when i try something that requires it to read the SP2.

If youre cdrom or rw is E: then youve added a hd or similiar to the pc,the
cdrom or rw is D: by default..To correct youre problem,go to run, type:regedit
In regedit,expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,software,microsoft,windows,set-up,
open source path. You'll see youre cdrom or rw is still D: Whereas its E: in
my
computer,L.click installation sources,go to edit,modify,set to E: close
out.Do the
same with source path, once thru, close out regedit.Retry windows components
& youre cdrom.....Also,same thing would have happened if you ran Sfc
/Scannow

Andrew - I wish I could say the above is amazingly stupid even for you,
but it's just normal for your garbage. You're such an idiot.

To the OP: Andrew E. is a troll who gives useless advice at best. At
worst, he gives advice that will damage a user's Windows install. Ignore
him.

It sounds like your CD drive isn't working but we don't have enough
information from you to be sure. Does the drive read any CDs at all? Can
you boot with the XP CD to see if the drive reads before the operating
system is loaded? Do you have more than one optical drive? If yes, does
the other one work?

If what I have written is incomprehensible to you, take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop. This will not be your local version
of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad. There is no shame in doing this.

I understand what you have said, and I agree with you about the advice Andrew
gave. Both drives work and if I put the cd in it will boot from My computer,
not autorun, as it did when first installed. There is no repair needed to the
drives. I have an older puter (2000) that still has memory available, so I
found no reason to replace it. I recently (Aug 1) upgraded to XP when all
support for ME was stopped, so I am still learning XP. So far, I am not happy
with the upgrade.
I have had several request from puter to insert XP sp2 into drive A and each
time I have tried to change it to E drive (F is an optical reader as well,
but that hasn't been an option on dropdown list). I guess my true question is
'is there a way to get the cd to read from E or F drives.'

If the drives are working - and you've tested this by putting in other
CDs while booted into XP - then reading the drives is not the issue. I'm
still a little unclear as to what you are trying to do and exactly what
happens when you do it, but check out these links about troubleshooting

Hi,

To change your source path:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

In the right pane: double click SourcePath and change it accordingly.

* Whatever drive is listed under SourcePath will be the drive it wants.
