Add/Remove Windows Components Catch 22

G

Guest

At some point, I added a windows component that wasn't active on my computer.
However, when I did that, despite the fact that nothing else was checked,
internet explorer, media player, wordpad and calculator were removed. When I
went back to re-add those that I somehow removed, I removed the one I had
just added. I cannot find a way to actually have calculator and wordpad
installed at the same time as internet explorer and mediaplayer. Anyone have
an answer to this?

Thanks.

Type into Start | Run...
wordpad
And click OK

Type into Start | Run...
calc
And click OK

If Wordpad and the Calculator both open, all you have to do is create new
shorcuts.

Ahhh, and therein lies the rub--I also do not have the "run" option. I'm
sure there's a way to get it back or an alternative route, but I don't know
what that is.

Thanks.

Shirley,

Run Missing From Start Menu

Pressing the Windows key + the R key will open Run.

With the XP Start Menu...
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Advanced tab | Scroll down and check:
Run command | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

With the Classic Start Menu...
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Check: Display Run | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

You could also use Windows Explorer to navigate to
\WINDOWS\system32
scroll down and find calc.exe

You could also use Windows Explorer to navigate to
\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories
scroll down and find wordpad.exe

Right click each one, point to Send To and click Desktop (create shortcut).

Then drag the shortcuts where ever you like.

Hi Wesley,

Got my Run back--thanks.
However, I have no system32 in Windows. Also, when I go to WindowsNT and
open my Accessories folder, it's empty.

Hi Shirley,

To open C:\WINDOWS\system32...
Start | Run | Type: system32 | Click OK
Also, when I go to WindowsNT and
open my Accessories folder, it's empty.

Well, shoot. So Wordpad is not there.

See if there is a wordpad.exe and a calc.exe in
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

Paste the following line into the Run command and click OK...

%windir%\system32\dllcache

In order to have the optional items, there must be a checkmark in the box.
No checkmark = no optional item.

In the Components list, click to select the check box that is next to the
component that you want to add. If the check box for a component is shaded,
only some of its subcomponents are selected for installation.

In the Components list, click to clear the check box next to the component
that you want to remove. Note that a shaded check box next to a component
indicates that only some of its subcomponents are installed.

See this...

How To Add or Remove a Windows Component in Windows XP

Also if you CANNOT get the above to work.

On your XP CD in the I386 folder...

In X:\I386 where X is whatever drive letter your CD drive is.

CALC.EX_ is the compressed version of calc.exe.

WORDPAD.EX_ is the compressed version of wordpad.exe.

The underscore (_) means that the file is compressed. The
compressed file needs to be expanded to be of any use.

These can both be expanded to the proper folders.

Insert your XP CD into your CD drive and enter (Copy and Paste) the
following command into the Start | Run box:

EXPAND D:\I386\CALC.EX_ %windir%\system32\calc.exe

Hit your ENTER key or click OK.

NOTE: You have to change if yours is different
Change D to = your CD drive letter. The First D after EXPAND.

Insert your XP CD into your CD drive and enter (Copy and Paste) the
following command into the Start | Run box:

EXPAND D:\I386\WORDPAD.EX_ %ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe

Hit your ENTER key or click OK.

NOTE: You have to change if yours is different
Change D to = your CD drive letter. The First D after EXPAND.

I use a Java applet called CoCalc as my preferred calculator. It's an
RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) scientific calculator that works much
like my old HP41-CX calculator, except the text is bigger and I can
see it. LOL. The only down side is that being a Java program, I can't
copy the result or paste numbers into it, but that's ok with me.

RPN (Reverse Polish Notation)

I remember those from trade school. :)
The only down side is that being a Java program

I do not have java, so that leaves me out.
