Add & Remove Programs

I recently bought a new computer that is running Windows XP Pro w/Media
Center. My "Add & Remove Program" was fine and all of a sudden my computer
would freeze whenever I clicked on the shortcut for the program and I would
have to reboot. That finally stopped for whatever reason, and I'm not sure
if this is related, but shortly after that I opened "Add & Remove" and
noticed a ton of new things there and many had an "installer icon" instead of
a normal program icon.
Some of the new items were things I have never even heard of (such as:
BufferChm, ccCommon, ESSini, etc.), plus many of the programs that were on
there previously are not now and only a couple of them still have the
"Change/Remove" buttons available. Any ideas of what may have happened or
more importantly how I can fix this would be appreciated. Please do not
tell me to do a System Restore as I have tried this and the program no longer
works (if it ever did in the first place). I do have "Norton Go Back"
installed as well and tried that and although the program worked, it didn't
fix the problems in my "Add & Remove". Thank you!

I have always had a firewall installed (windows) and I have always had spybot
and adaware installed and use both (along with SpySweeper and Norton) every
couple of days. They rarely, if ever, pick up anything and when they do, I
take care of it. So far though, there hasn't been anything serious.

I have a firewall installed (the one that comes with Window Xp Pro), plus I
also have and run every few days, AdAware and SpyBot and do not pick anything
up. I also intalled AVG from your link and ran it. It came up with nothing
as well. I checked my registry and under local
machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/unintall, there are only a
very few hotfixes from window's updates and my media player listed. Any
ideas why it may just have that?
