Add/Remove programs - problems with

S

Sheila

I am trying to remove a program. On clicking Add/Remove in Control Panel I
am told I have the program and to click if I want to Repair or Remove so
click Remove, next window repeats that I should click Remove, I do so. And
up comes "Error 1500. Another installation is in progress" and that I must
complete that first. I am not aware that I am installing anything! but
computer says I am! How am I to find this ghostly installation so I can
finish it and then get rid of the program I don't want.
A bit verbose but at least you know what I have done and what I am trying to
do!

Would be nice to know the program you are trying to uninstall.

Have you rebooted and/or booted into safe mode and see if you can uninstall
there?

Sometimes the uninstall file gets deleted or corrupted and a reinstall then
an uninstall of the program works.

Some suggestions, let us know if any work.

It's called 4oD and is a program from a TV channel in the UK where you can
watch programmes you missed earlier in the week etc. and it has been playing
up and everything they (the TV channel) suggested hasn't worked and I got
thoroughly irritated and decided to uninstall it. As I said "the computer"
says it can't do this until I finish installation, but I am not aware of
installing anything!

Booting and rebooting into safe mode sounds like serious computing work.

Would be grateful for

1. Do this
2 Do the next thing
3 etc.

sort of advice, if you wouldn't mind.

OK, to boot a computer into safe mode, as soon as the initial screen (either
a system logo or the information on the bios) shows on the monitor start
tapping the F8 key. You should not enter the normal XP screen but receive a
message about safe mode. Select safe mode and then hit Enter. Your monitor
will not look the same as it will have bigger information blocks on it but
you should be able to get into Control Panel/Add Remove programs and try
removing it there.

Let us know what happens when you try to remove the program in safe mode
using the above instructions. May be able to help further if this fails.

Well that was an experience, as if my specs had suddenly become magnifying
glasses!

OK, did all you suggested to no avail but got the following message which
may offer a clue:

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you
are running Windows in Safe Mode or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed"

I scrolled down the list of programmes within Add/Remove and found

Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)
and
Windows Live Installer.

I did nothing with either.

I hope this will help you to identify the problem for me.

Thank you for taking the time.

My first instinct would be to try the "repair" option, then restart your
computer, then try the "remove" again.

If that doesn't work, and you're feeling brave and adventurous, you could
try killing off a particular process first, like this:

Hold down Shift and Control then press Escape. This should bring up Windows
Task Manager.
Click on the second tab, Processes.
Click on the header of the first column, Image Name, to sort it
alphabetically.
Look for one called "msiexec.exe". Click on it once to select it, then click
on End Process at the bottom right.
Confirm in the pop-up that you *do* want to terminate the process.
Try uninstalling the program again.

If still no joy try doing any/all of the above but having stopped the
Kontiki service first, like this:

Click on Start then Run
Type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter
In the Command Prompt window, type
net stop kservice
and press Enter.
Check for confirmation, then type "exit" and press Enter to close the
window.

Try uninstalling 4oD again.

I hope that's clear!

Otherwise, you could try throwing a question at the forum over at
http://community.channel4.com/eve/forums/a/cfrm/f/1180054776

Other people there seem to be having plenty of problems with 4oD too!

NB: If you DO get 4oD removed, you might want to do some checking on whether
your kservice has gone too - folk out there seem to be finding it still
running.

I would imagine that the message "Another installation is in progress" is
because you are clicking remove twice. Try checking in program files for an
uninstaller that came with the program. This should advise of any problems
uninstalling and what they are. Then advise of any error messages

Thank you Olorin and LVTravel for taking the time and trouble to try to help
me. I took your advice Olorin (sorry not sure about adding the accent in
your name without coming out of this and searching my key info folder) and
went into 4oD's forum. What a mess.

So, have thought what the heck, I don't have to watch every tv programme I
have missed, so am abandoning the whole thing.

What a wimp! Never mind. Again, my thanks to you both.

Thanks for writing. There's no other way of responding to each of the
windows other than clicking the remove regardless of how many times you do it.

There was no uninstaller in with the program.

I've given up! see my reply to LVTravel and Olorin.

It was nice of you to try to help me.
