AD error when running dcpromo on child 2k3r2

When run dcpromo on what is going to be a child domain in an existing forest
I get past the restoration password and I recieve an error message box with
"Error message when you run the Active Directory Installation Wizard: "The
version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible
with the version of Active Directory on this computer"" at the bottom. I
have followed the steps at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917385/en-us and
they did not do any good, the schema master and such are server 2003 R2 and
adprep does nothing. Before I go and reinstall or install server 2003 is
there anything else I can try? What else could be causing this?

There is one Schema master in a forest. It is probably in your root domain,
not the child domain.
Did you run adprep on the correct server?
