AD domain and pre-win2k domain name are different...

Can anyone explain the following situation? I have 3 DC on my LAN, all of them win 2000… when I expend “AD User and Computers†domain name is “my_domain.com†but when I look at pre-win 2000 name shows something else in e.g ABCDE… let say I right click on “my computer†on the desktop of one of the client I see client_name.my_domain.com but on logon screen for this client in box for domain I see ABCDE ??? domain is in mix-mode but since all DC are win 2000 I do not see why I shouldn’t switch it to native modeâ€
Should I assume that at the moment of switching to native mode, my pre –win 2000 name will disappear? Any idea what’s going on here, besides that NT4 domain was ABCDE and then someone installed new W2K DC for my_domain.com name as a domain (FYI I just took over administration of this network after someone else

Thank

Hello,

When an NT 4.0 domain is upgraded, the NetBIOS name (also called the
downlevel name) of the old NT 4.0 domain is carried forward as the
downlevel name of the Windows 2000 domain, by default.

The donwlevel name has nothing to do with mixed or native mode, and you
can't make it "go away."

The downlevel name exists for the purpose of supporting downlevel clients
such as Windows 9X and NT 4.0, who don't understand DNS anem for Windows
2000 domains.

I hope this helps.
