Ad-Aware SE won't download

I just tried the link in your message and it goes to the
same page. I click on "Download Now" and it just sits
there. Another line says "If your download does not
start, click here. I click on that and still no data is
being received. Another line says "Having trouble
downloading? Click Here for help. I Click on that but
nothing applies to my situation. For some reason, the
download won't start, but I don't receive any error
messages. I wanted to use Ad-Aware to try and
remove "Comet System" problem that MSAS says it removes
but it keeps coming back. We have Win XP Home edition,
SPII with all updates installed. Thanks

Thanks for the feed back but why won't it download for
me? All the other update downloads for many programs work
fine. If anyone has any ideas, we would appreciate them.
Thanks

Are you using Windows XP SP2? Do you know about the information bar at
the top of the page? Are you giving permission for the download? Also
note, this is a group for MSAS beta issues, not ad-aware download problems.

My original issue was a MSAS issue. MSAS would quarantine
Comet System and we would instruct it to remove it and
MSAS would say it's removed. The next day or so it would
be back. This has been going on for over a month. Someone
on this group suggested we us Ad-Aware to remove Comet.
That's why my post is here. Thanks Stan H.

Sorry - I don't mean to be taking you in circles. Not being able to manage
the Ad-aware download is a problem.

Have you also done a full scan for viruses, with current definitions?

FWIW, Trend Micro's online scanner now covers spyware as well, and removes.

We've scanned for virus using AVG and EZ AntiVirus by CA.
We initially had what EZ called Trojans but they were
successfully removed. The safe mode scan didn't find
anything. I'll try your next suggestion. Thanks

I tried scanning with Housecall but received the
following message: "Housecall ActiveX component is not
ready". I'am in over my head again. Couldn't find
anything in I.E. tools, internet options, about ActiveX
components. I'll try a search and see if I find anything.
Thanks

Hi

I think you have some problem with *Internet Explorers
information bar*, both
for running Housecalls activex module and downloading Adaware.

This is from SP2 howtos:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/web/sp2_infobar.mspx

"Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes many additional
features that allow you to take control of your security
when you surf the Web. Internet Explorer now displays an
Information Bar (just below the address bar) where you can
see information about downloads, blocked pop-up windows,
potential security risks, and other activities. This
information helps you to avoid potentially harmful files you
might otherwise accept from the Internet. The Information
Bar doesn't clutter up your browser when you don't need it.
It only appears when there's information to communicate.

If Internet Explorer default settings are on, you'll see the
Information Bar when a Web site tries to:

Install an ActiveX control on your computer.

Open a pop-up window.

Download a file to your computer.

Tip When you see a message in the Information Bar, click the
message to see more information or to take action."

I agree with plun.

When you start the Housecall scan, it must download a piece of code (activex
control) to your machine. By default IE6 on xp sp2 blocks these. you
should get a small yellow information bar appearing at the top of the
browser window. right-click this bar, and allow the download of the activex
control. That should allow the scan to continue.

We rescanned using Housecall this a.m. and 19 threats
were detected and 19 were removed. We rescanned several
times trying to get rid of "ADW TREBATES" but it keeps
coming back. Don't know what harm it can do or why
Housecall can't remove it. We selected the Security scan
because we have scanned for virus many times with many
products. We will try downloading and running Ad-Aware
next and go from there. Thanks Stan H.

I've made some headway. Housecall was loading and the
info bar popped up and I was able to continue loading.
Before I changed the I.E. settings the info bar didn't
appear just error messages. I really can't define what
was wrong. Housecall went on forever over 2.5 hours so I
finally cancelled and will try another run tomorrow.
Thanks to all

Hi Stan

Some proposals and questions.

- Are you running Microsoft Antispyware ? (MSAS)

- I think MSAS AND Lavasofts Adaware are a perfect combination.

- About antivirus, do you have a antivirus program installed ?

AVG is a free one:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

- Scannings takes very long time, its probably beacuse of
"overfilled"
temporarily folders, you can use this program for cleaning.

CCleaner:

We've been running MSAS since Feb 5. We have two
AntiVirus programs: AVG and EZ Antivirus by CA which run
nightly. We also have CCleaner installed but have only
used it once since it deletes all the links that are
stored with the run command. We need to find a good way
of storing URLs so we can always have access to them. I
tried downloading Ad_Aware today and it still won't
download. I don't get the infor bar popup or anything, it
just sits there.
Thanks Stan H.

Hi again.

About antivirus programs, it is really important to just have
one of them, to run 2 causes conflicts.

URL, best practise is to store URL as bookmarks within menu
Favorites.
I am also lazy and using adressbar......... ;)

Downloading, try to reset all IE settings within menu tools,
reset websetting and
try to download again, watch out for information bar and
click on it and permit this download.
