After a recent session of running this app - my cursor began showing a
blinking hourglass that did not go away after a re-boot.

LavaSoft was of no help. I'm considering re-installing WinXP but perhaps
there's another solution? I have no Restore points to fall back to within
last 60 days.

Would Repair possibly fix the problem? I get a 'application failed to
initialize' msg when I close down but it's not up long enough for me to note
it.

Possibly due to a partially removed malware item trying to load. It's
premature to consider reinstalling. Here are some trouble shooting steps.
1. Try running msconfig and using selective startup - Uncheck Load startup
items. If restart is then normal use msconfig to narrow what start up
program is causing the problem by selectively enabling items in the Startup
tab.
2. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager to try to identify the
problem program and terminate it there for testing. Once identified, ask
for further help re. removing.
3. As a last resort, restore the quarantined items from Ad-aware.
Restoring spyware isn't a desirable solution, but further action can
proceed from there if it works.

Why no restore points for 60 days? That should be fixed also.

Your advice is well received and I've filed it for future reference. Before I
implemented your suggestion(s) - I ran NIV. It found 4 'baddies' including
one in the trash. removing these solved the problem.

Your main suggestion as to causation was mostly likely correct in any event.

For my next task I have to decide whether to pay Claria for an ad-free Gator
or go with some other app and reestablish all my user names and passwords.
