Q810565 Causes Contextual Menu to Fail

R

Randall L. Rike

This happened on both of my computers at the same time.
One is a desktop w/WinXP Pro, the other a laptop w/WinXP
Home. Both are set to automatically download updates, and
I keep them up to date. Both systems began to fail at the
same time.

The symptom was that when I right-clicked on My Computer,
I got an hourglass and couldn't get out of that. I had to
Ctrl-Alt-Del and Task Manager out. If I double-clicked on
My Computer, and then tried to use the File Menu, I got
the same failure. Right-clicking on any object once the
Exporer was open also hung with an hourglass. Basically,
anything that would display thta menu causes the failure.

I tried to do a System Restore, but none of the System
Restore Points worked.

Then, using Add/Remove Programs, I manaully removed
Updates one-at-a-time. When I got to Q810565, the
problem went away.

I then re-installed all of the updates, and the system
still works.

I would simply ask whether you definitely had your virus scanner
switched off before you DOWNLOADED and RAN the Microsoft Updates?
