AD and child

Tim

Hi,

I have one AD domain controller and install one child
domain. My question is if the main domain controller is
failed can user still be able to login to the child
domain controller? if so how can i relpicate users to the
child domain? Also i don't see DNS or DHCP on child
domain. Did i install child domain incorrectly or it
should be like this.

Thank you in advance.

Hello Tim,

Thank you for your post!

I am confused on your statement of "Child" domain controller. If you
installed an additional domain controller to your domain, then the answer
to your question is "Yes". The additional domain controller will answer the
logon request if the other domain controller was to fail. If the DNS zone
for your domain is "Active Directory Intergated," then the zone will
replicate to all domain controllers in your domain. The zone will not be
accessible from the additional domain controller until DNS is installed on
the machine.

If you created a Child Domain, then the answer to your question is "No."
User Accounts will not be replicated from the parent domain to the child
domain, since the child domain is a different domain. User account objects
are located in the domain container which only replicates in its own
domain. In Windows 2000, the Active Directory Intergrated zone is also
located in the Domain Container, so only domain controllers in that domain
will recieve a copy of the zone.
