Hi ,

We are planning to upgrade our domain to 2k3 from 2k, our domain is a child
domain. Would the root domain needed to be upgraded first before upgrading
child DC's to 2k3 or will just /forestprep /domainprep on the root domain be
sufficient to upgrade chile DC's first before upgarding root DC's to 2k3

Nope. Any Domain can "go first."
or will just /forestprep

Technically this is done to the SCHEMA master
no matter which domain provides the DC for that
role -- but the default is in the root (key is the
Schema Master not the domain though.)
/domainprep on the root domain be

Is irrelevant to the upgrade of a child domain.

No, you must /domainprep the specific domain in which
you will add a Win2003 DC (e.g., the child domain here.)

You do not have to /domainprep the other domains until
you wish to add (but there is probably no reason not to
do that now; it just isn't required.)

Hi,

If you wanna update a Child Domain you need to run adprep/forestprep and
adprep/domainprep. The adprep/forestprep should be performed on the
Schemamaster (RID, PDC in the Root). Domainprep should be run on the
infrastructure master

325379 "How to upgrade Windows 2000 domain controllers to Windows Server2003"

The Root should be a Windows 2003 Server domain. You may have not all
function available if your Root is still 2000.

Hope it helps...
