ActiveX problems

Hi

I'm having problems loading the following pages - the activeX controls
don't seem to be installing correctly.

http://www.nwales-traffic.co.uk/english/road/cameras/cam.asp?camera=15

http://www2.essex.ac.uk/wimovac/activex.htm

Using XP PRo with SP2 and IE 6.0.2900

I get the pop up box waning me I'm about to install a activeX control
then another box warning me that the publisher can't be verified.

After clicking install the lower Left icon says done but the
placeholder still shows a red X

if I click refresh I'm back to the information bar saying IE has
stopped the site from installing a activeX control - click here for
options

Thanks,

Splowe.

Try this setting change - just for this one site, if you trust it - in IE go
to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security
section and check the box by "Allow software to run or install even if the
signature is invalid" (which seems to apply to that site's ActiveX control),
click Apply, click Okay. Don't forget to uncheck that box later. If no
joy, go to the Security tab, Custom button and check your ActiveX settings
there.

Hi - Thanks for the suggestion - tried that - tried most other
suggestions from similar problems in this newsgroup - have run MS
Malacious software scan, Spybot Search and Destroy - it seems as it
the activex control simple is not being installed - other activex
sites work ok - can you suggest a site with a safe but
unknown/uncertified activex control to test with.

Have also tried disabling zone alarm pro & norton AV but still get
same problem

Regards

Steve.

Well I got IE to quit displaying the refusal notice but despite that it
still won't work, and I tried putting the main site and others linked in the
page into the trusted zone and still no go, and I turned off checking for
sigs and certs and all manner of things and still no go, with either site.
It "Says" it's downloading but who knows :)

Curious.

Like you I think I have tried everything so I go try on a brand new XP
install with no updates yet...

Hmm, no go on there either and at this time I don;t have a machine with 2K
accessible. Mind you, if you think the settings in XP pro are tight you
should see the defaults in W2003 :)

I looked at some traffic cams in associated websites and they worked so
maybe we have some error on the actual pages?

Hi,

I know the pages do work ok - my PC at the office runs XP Pro -
updated with SP2 back end of last year - only difference I can think
of is the PC in the office has MS Java VM - my PC at home is using Sun
Java - should this matter -?

Hi Charlie

At the office which has MS VM Java the webcam works ok - I've haven't
tried the Essex University pages at the office - will try tomorrow -
not at work today it's a public holiday today.

Thanks for the links to the MS Java VM files - I'd tried that route
before but all the downloads I've tried including the 2 you posted
just seem to be upgrades the installation stops with a message saying
that Java VM is not installed and it will only upgrade over a current
version of Microsoft VM.

Regards Steve.

It might, which one works Steve? This one has Sun Java. I have been a bit
short of time so didn't really look to see what the pages used. Here's a
couple of links, I have to reboot so I'll be back later.

The first of the files on that website is definitely the Java Machine, and
the second is an update from a while ago, the third is (or appears to be)
the one you get offered by Windows Update once the first is installed. I
know that's correct because this machine had never had the MS machine on it
and it does now. However the second update posted on the website may not be
needed - basically I installed the first and went straight to Windows
Update.

Unfortunately it made no difference anyway, and a better look at the pages
reveals that Java is nothing to do with it.

I couldn't get the .cab file from the traffic cam site but I did get the
university ones (Sine and BarChart) and then copied the relevant stuff into
a local page in case there was any conflict caused by the various security
settings, but again no luck. I can't find a setting problem on here, in fact
I run with fairly relaxed settings compared to many folks, and still nothing
so I wonder if the ActiveX has been compiled properly. I am not sure which
of the ActiveX related newsgroups it would be best to ask questions in, just
in case something else can affect the compilations such as having .net
installed. I guess it's not impossible that compilation on a machine without
it, or with an earlier version compiler may have a compilation option
missing for newer installs or for installs with alternative libraries
present.

Tried the Essex University page - no that doesn't work at the office
though using MS Java VM.

Steve.

Firefox does not use Active X. Much faster and much less problematic than
IE6. Try it to solve your problem and report back.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion - using Firefox I get a still picture as
opposed to a 4-5 sec refresh rate video - there is some code in the
webpage that checks to see what browser is being used - if it's
Firefox then it doesn't try to load the ActiveX video control.

Thanks,

Regards

Steve.

The problem webcam site is now working - the apparently have moved the
activeX control to a different location - at least it's working.
