ActiveX problem - automation server can't create object

A couple of days ago IE stopped running the ActiveX versions of Yahoo Mail
and GMail. Yahoo tells me to enable 'Script ActiveX controls marked safe for
scripting' but it is enabled! GMail tells me to do the same.

The Yahoo error message also says 'xmldom:failure -2146827859 Automation
server can't create object' and 'xmlhttp:failure -2146827859 Automation
server can't create object'

Tried searching everywhere but no sign of this error. Has anyone any ideas?
