ActiveX Controls

I don't know if I am posting in the right area or not but need an answer. I
have been trying to download some software that needs to install an ActiveX
Control before proceeding and my computer is not allowing the ActiveX Control
to be installed. I have gone into internet options and changed all the
prompts to allow ActiveX and shut down my firewall while trying and am still
not able to get past the ActiveX control screen.

Don't shut off your firewall unless you're behind a hardware firewall as
well - that's dangerous even for a few seconds (and isn't related).
Are you using SP2?
Did you try adding the site's name (page.domain.com) to your trusted sites
in IE?

I do have my firewalls back on. I am running SP2. I did run a PitStop check
and it is telling me that ActiveX is not supported. I usually run MyIE2
browser but did open Internet Explorer to run the PitStop Check and it still
tells me there that ActiveX is not supported. I can't get back to the
website now to try and add the site's name to the trusted sites.

I have "never" seen any reputable software that requires you to install an
activex control to download said software. I would be very careful of what
the activex control ultimately ends up doing to your computer. It is a great
way to install a trojan, dialer or spyware.

I am trying to download either the Verizon/Yahoo or Verizon/MSN and they both
require that. I have "chatted" with Verizon on-line help and they tell me
that this is a software problem.

So you are trying to do an "on line" install. That is a far cry from
downloading a program. If it is a reputable site, go for it.

Why not get the plain vanilla MSN Messenger from Microsoft
(http://messenger.msn.com/Xp/Default.aspx). Forget about the "branded"
versions from the service providers.

There are suppose to be several "benefits" from either Yahoo or MSN to go
with the Verizon DSL. I would go ahead with the download but the PitStop
test says that "ActiveX is not supported"--how do I get it supported???

Hi,

A shot in the dark here, see if this helps:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed an ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

Thank you -- I tried that but I still have the same problem. When I run a
PCPitStop ActiveX Control Test it tells me that "ActiveX is not supported."
So, how do I get it supported???
