Activation question

When XP is no longer supported by MS (lifecycle expires) will 'activation' still be possible?
You know, people are STILL buying Win98 (as on ebay) and have no trouble installing it. When Xp becomes that 'old' will people still
be able to install and 'activate' it?

Does anybody know if XP ever expires (no longer runs on a PC because it's MS says it OUTDATED - thus FORCING one to buy another of
their products)?

Thanks

1. WinXP activation will be avalable until Microsoft Supports it.
2. Microsoft Will support it aprox five years more after Longhorn release.

Activation better go beyond their support of it; Linux
here I come. It should be my choice what OS I prefer-not
Microsoft!

See http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/basics/activation/mpafaq.asp

Will Microsoft use activation to force me to upgrade? In other words,
will Microsoft ever stop giving out activation codes for any of the
products that require activation?

No, Microsoft will not use activation as a tool to force people to
upgrade. Activation is merely an anti-piracy tool, nothing else.

Microsoft will also support the activation of Windows XP throughout
its life and will likely provide an update that turns activation off
at the end of the product's lifecycle so users would no longer be
required to activate the product.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Carey, and most everyone else who frequents these newsgroups, is getting
tired of people who threaten to go over to Apple, and then remain here.
Hell, they should go! Then we can be rid of them!

Hear that people! No one is forcing you to use Windows XP. Go now if you are
not happy. Don't just threaten. Really do it. Please. See how you like
paying double for your computer. See how you like paying for a next .1
version of the operating system when it is no more than a service pack -
that Microsoft "gives" to you for free.

Please, GO!

At the rate that other companies are adding DRM/activation, do you want to
lay odds that Apple will not eventually join the bandwagon?
