I have bought Sony VIAO notebook while I was working in the USA. In a
year I moved back to my home country Lithuania and gave it as present to
my girlfriend. After a couple of months a tea was spilled on this
notebook. It was not possible to replace the motherboard in Lithuania
and I sold the notebook for spare parts. However I kept the sticker with
the WinXP Home license for myself. Later on I bought a new notebook with
Linux OS and now I am thinking whether I can use the old license to
install and activate WinXP Home on my new notebook? Do I have to call
somebody in the States or locally?

Thanks

Sony, like all other PC makers use an OEM version of XP in their new
systems. This version is licensed on the first PC it is installed on and
cannot be moved to a new computer.

Based upon your description, you have an OEM license for WinXP.
An OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.

You'll need to purchase a new license for the new computer.

It will Install and run just fine. Ignore MS Advice and install it anyway.
Just download the needed drivers from VIAO's web page and GO FOR IT.
