Sorry if my post was misunderstood. If you read all the posts in
chronological order my post made sense. That's the way most of the people
using these newsgroups read them. There are a lot of neophyte newsgroup
users here. Most new newsgroup users have no idea about top posting, bottom
posting, etc. I was trying to help her, not admonish her for downloading
something she shouldn't have done. Many (most) people have no idea how
windows licensing works nor do they care. They just want to buy something
that works. There are many sites on the internet, as I'm sure you know, that
take advantage of people and sell them something that is at best fraudulent
and at worst doesn't work and has malware attached. I merely pointed out
where she might obtain a legitimate copy or alternatively download a
legitimate free OS. If I am mistaken and she did download SP2 and something
went wrong then Anastasia I apologise, hope you wern't offended.

Yes , you are right , english is not my native language. But the problem is
not only in this , but also in my knowledges of subject area and in MY
capability of explaining! I feel that i would be able to explain in even in
my native russian language.
That's only MY fault that some of you didn't understand me correctly! So

I'll try to explain it once again.

I found out that on my pc i have SP1 installed. So i decided to download SP2
and install it. Actually the installation looked more like installing of
updates, including SP2. I found updates on this site "microsoft.com" . And it
costed me NOTHING (to my surprise) to download them. But when i installed all
the updates and SP2, i have seen the window, announcing that i need to
activate Windows withing the 30 days period.
I always failed to activate, becouse i don't have an activation key. That's
why ..now the period is over and the activation is still hadn't been done.
And now i can't enter my system. I tried to make an activation by phone. I
called the representative, told her the installation ID. which was displayed
in my activation window. But ..that didn't help . She told me that it's not
valid or the company doens't want to accept it.
So ..i need the activation key. And it's very strange, that i don't have it.
Of course it's strange , i know. But i really don't have necessary
documentation. Becouse i didn't install XP on my pc. Local IT guys did it.

And i really don't know what to do. I can open my pc only in safe mode.

Thank you for your very gracious and complete explanation of your
situation. Take the machine back to the "local IT guys". They
apparently installed a pirated copy of XP on your machine in the first
place. They will need to install a legal copy of XP. I believe a Repair
Install (see Michael Stevens' link for instructions) will work.

If those IT people are no longer available or unwilling, then they
cheated you and unfortunately the burden of buying a retail legal copy
of XP will fall on you. There is no other way around this.

Unfortunately it sounds like whomever installed XP on your computer used a
product ID that Microsoft has determined to be fraudulent. At this point you
are at the mercy of Microsoft. If you do a google search:

You will find many sites advising how to get around this. Please be advised
that many of these site are warez sites and going to them may install
spyware at best and viruses at worst. Your best option would be to talk to
whomever installed XP and see if you can get a valid key. Your next best
option would be to purchase a retail copy of Windows XP with SP2 and perform
a repair install. See the procedure here.

Not even close, she specifically stated Windows SP2, and it sounds
like nothing more.


Dunno, but MS's PA is buggy anyway, so could be any number of things,
other than your suspicions. This isn't the first time either, that a
service pack, (possibly and) wrongly caused the the OS to be invalid,
and caused (another needless) required activation.


Yea, but you gave the impression of shoot first, and then ask
questions, when there shouldn't have been any hint of such by you. It
wouldn't be a surprise if she doesn't ask for help here anymore.


Here, I fixed that for you.

It could be that she simply meant "I installed XP with SP2", rather than "I
downloaded XP with SP2".

I have seen the word "downloaded" used by many neophytes here in these
newsgroups, and what they really meant was "installed".
