activation issue ?

hi..

customer i have installed windows xp pro
applied all service packs etc. then when he tried to activate it failed.
he spoke to MS who said he's have to speak to his supplier as the hash
wasn't valid.

spoke to the supplier and they said that activation should take place prior
to updates being appled as there after the changes make updating impossible.

is this correct or are we talking about dodgey copies of windows?

No.
Having installed the updates should make no difference on Activation.

Something seems very suspicious about the supplier.
