if i have done this or not please. I`ve been into system
via accessories etc but cannot find "activate windows"
nor is there a reminder flashing up. Like i said i may

Are customers notified that they have to activate?

Yes. Customers are notified of the activation requirement on the box if they purchase
a retail version of the product. Additionally, for programs such as Word, customers
are reminded to activate every time that they use the program, up until the fiftieth
use, which is the maximum number of times that they can use the program before they
have to activate. For Windows, customers are reminded every time that they log on and
regularly up until the end of the activation grace period, which is 30 days. If they
have not activated the product in the specified time frame, they have to do this to
continue using the product.

Greetings --

Pre-installed OEM operating systems are typically either
pre-activated at the factory or are BIOS-locked and do not required
activation as long as they're installed on the computer with which
they're sold.

The OS will let you know, with frequent (several times a day)
reminders, if you do need to activate. To check for yourself, Start >
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows.
Alternatively, Start > Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A."
It will probably tell you that WinXP has already been activated.

Check you activation status by typing the following in the start-rub
box

oobe/msoobe /a

If you purchased a machine with XP Pre-installed, it almost certainly
was handled by a different mechanism, which 'locks' the system to the
BIOS on the motherboard. Then if at boot that checks out, the
activation check is bypassed. The activation wizard would be at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and if that is not present this is a BIOS-locked machine
