Just purchased a new computer, HP pavilion a230n, with
Windows XP. I've registered computer and it says that if
I don't activate Windows XP within 30 days it stops
working....What does this mean and please email answers to
(e-mail address removed) before 30 days are up.

It means that on or about October 20th of this year, your new computer
will probably stop working because you didn't activate Windows as they
request.

I'm sure there was was paper or a manual about Windows XP that came with
the machine. I can't remember exactly, but I think there was "help" or
"for more information" links available on the screen when you saw the
message about registration. Also, you can read about registration on
Microsoft's web site.

See www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

You should get on the net and go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and take 'Activate Windows on the internet now'

I would have *expected* a major maker like HP to handle things by
having the system set up differently - a method called 'locking to the
BIOS', which should need no activation action by you. In that case
either that item will not be present, or will say 'windows already
activated'. However, I also would not trust HP to get things right.

I totally agree with your assessment of HP, Alex. However, I also wonder
if the OP really mean "Office XP" activation, which would make more
sense. All the HP computers I've seen already have activated the
operating system. In any case, the answer is the same: get on line and
activate whatever it is or it won't work any more!
