Is it possible to save a presentation as html which will keep the interaction
between slides? ie clicking on a section of a presentation which jumps to a
custom show and automatically returns to current slide

Not sure about that, but can you do it w/o custom shows?

Slide 1 - Welcome
Slide 2 - Includes link to e.g. "More detail"
Slide 3 - Show continues
...
Slide 20 - Ending slide with End Show actionbutton

Slide 21 - More Detail
...
Slide 25 - Last "more detail" slide, with link to Slide 3
