Acrobat to Word

When scanning in a document into a pdf file, is it necessary that I have the
full version of Acrobat and not just the reader if I want to be able to
convert to OCR and then into an editable Word document?

If you have a document and a scanner, why convert it to a .pdf file at all?
Did your scanner come with OCR software? Most do these days.

To produce an editable version of a PDF file, you need either the full
version of Acrobat (not merely the reader); PDF compatible OCR software such
as Finereader; or a file compatible conversion utility such as PDF2Word.

If none of these are available, open the PDF in the reader, print the
document, run the printed document through your scanner and use the OCR
software that was undoubtedly supplied with it to produce an editable copy.

Well it gets a little more complicated. We're trying a trial version of a
OCR software, but the scanner I have is not listed as compatible. I was told
to scan the documents as a jpeg then bring it into the software. The manual
for the scanner I was given said to use Adobe Acrobat 6.0, but I only have
the reader. Thanks for the info on FineReader, has anyone tried the OmniPage
or DocSmartz?

Print the PDF file from Acrobat reader. Put the print in your scanner and
scan to jpg file format. Load the jpg into your OCR software.

Actually they are paper documents that are being scanned in, and I was told
to use jpeg to scan them in.
