Does anyone know of an accurate GMT time server that can be used to
synchronise Windows XP time?

Many thanks

The server does not need to be GMT.
The option under the Internet Time option on the Date/Time applet in Control
Panel to synch with time.windows.com does so correctly - you just have to
have you local time zone settings correct.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has an
excellent free daytime server program availabe at
www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq
The Windows XP time synchronization program available by
double clicking on the clock is also fairly accurate.

Thanks. In that case why do different servers have different times, i.e.
some are more accurate than others. Which would be the most accurate for
GMT?

Many thanks

You can't guaranty the route your time request will take.
How accurate do you need to be?

You can also add other time servers to the list in XP. You don't have
to rely on time.windows.com

To add another time server...
Double click on the clock and then click on the internet time tab

Highlight time.windows.com in the server box and then type in a new
server such as time.nist.gov
The new time server will be added to the list and you will now have a
drop down list to choose which server to sync with. (I think the
maximum you can have is 3 in the list though)

The ones in the US will do as well as is possible across the internet,
and are all synchronised with UTC, - the Internet synch on my machine
then give correct GMY results. But to within the accuracy implied by
net delays - around 190 ms to time.nist.gov, with about 10ms scatter.
If you want more precise timing than that, you really cannot do it on
the internet, you need a direct phone line. But that would not perhaps
be either free or convenient.. I think NPL in the UK provide such a
service - try www.npl.gov.uk and see.
