Account Logon Icons have disappeared

The logon icons on my wife's computer have disappeared and I can't get logged
on to correct this problem. I have tried ctrl-alt-del, but this does not
work either. Is there a way to login and have the icons to correctly show
once more?

Have you tried Ctrl+ALt+Del+del, used Administrator and entered no password?
Did you ever assign a password to the default built-in Administrator account
that came with Windows XP?

It's unclear what you mean by ctrl-alt-del doesn't work. If XP Pro ctrl
-alt-del brings up the login box where you manually enter the account
name and password. What happens when you try this? Also try logging
into the built in Administrator account - account name Administrator,
using the password assigned to it. If XP Home boot into safe mode.
