Accidently deleted URL: HyperText Transfer Protocol

I was having trouble (still am) with clicking on desktop shortcuts I've put
on and with some I'm getting the error message, "Windows cannot find
'http://www.theolympian.com/'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and
then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then
click Search." On this example, I get an error message, then, the correct
screen appears. It seems to work just fine except for that error message.

I was advised on how to fix it here and it worked fine. I performed a
Start-> Control Panel -> Folder Options -> 'File Types' tab then found
extension [NONE] for Internet Shortcut, extension HTML, then extension HTM.
For each of them, I clicked on them, then clicked on Advanced -> Edit and
unchecked the DDE box.

This fixed things.

Then, diddling around like I know I shouldn't, I got back in and was fooling
around. Now, the HTM entry is completely gone from the Folder Options
window. I somehow deleted it.

So, after all that, how can I get the HTM entry back in the Folder Options
window so things will work right? I have no idea what I'm doing and gentle
assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Could you not right-click on a htm file, choose Open With and set the
"always open with this program" option there, or if you have TweakUI
installed IIRC it has a repair associations option somewhere.

I have this problem as well. It shouldn't really require this kind of hack.

I may ask in a Firefox forum.

Cheers.

After re-reading your post, I'm not sure if you are saying that the HTML
links still work and that they have disappeared from the "File Types" list,
or your HTML files won't open at all?

If that is the case a System Restore may be in order.

Thanks, but that didn't do it. It's the "URL: HyperText Markup Language"
entry in Folder Options > File Types. I'm not sure it's an association
problem.

Thanks again and other suggestions would be welcome.

It's not a Firefox problem. It's in the Control Panel > Folder Options >
File Types and the HTML entry is missing. That *seems* to be causing the
problem. When I click on a shortcut on my desktop (screen) I get an error
message like I quoted, but then the proper screen is displayed. Thanks for
the suggestion and others are welcome.

So in other words you are back to square one, only htm/l is missing from
your file types list under folder options.

I only suggested Firefox group since it seems the only program affected by
the problem, so whether it is cause by Firefox or not someone may have
solved it, or know the exact cause.

Did you try system restore?

Hi doby,

I don't have a restore point that goes back that far, unfortunately.

You're right. I get the problem with Firefox. Did you hear from them? Did
you try the restore point?

You'd think there would be a Microsoft solution to this problem. I'm sure
open to other ideas!

Thanks much for your thoughts.
