accessing work's vpn and browse internet at same time, how ?

Hi I have broadband access to the internet via my isp. I also have a vpn
connection into work. If i fire up the vpn connection, i cannot browse the
internet locally. i have to diconnect the vpn connection to browse the
internet. However... i also have vmware installed on my machine. if i am
connected to vpn and have a vmware connection established, I seem to be able
to browse the internet from my vmware connection whilst connected to vpn.

My question is, how can i have the ability to browse the internet locally
(without using vmware) and at the same time use vpn to access my work's
intranet?

any help most appreciated!

thanks for the link. i disabled the use of the remote network's default gateway in my vpn settings and all works fine.
